Hanna was a student at St Hugh’s college, Oxford, while working with the Senn group on her Part II research project, the final part of an undergraduate masters. She looked at understanding the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the negative thermal expansion in A-site deficient perovskites. The research focused on MZrF6 compounds, modelling the lattice dynamics that drive isotropic NTE over a large temperature range. Primarily using PDFs to identify variation in structural parameters, this sought to identify specific phonon modes that contribute to the thermal expansion of these materials. Outside of chemistry, she volunteered with the charity Branch Up, which runs activity days for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and enjoyed swimming and painting.
